Flying Dog Brewery and the Gonzo Golden Ticket!

Denver, Colo., Jun 22 – This week The Flying Dog Brewery will launch a collectors edition of their tribute beer to Hunter S. Thompson. Gonzo Imperial Porter (collectors release) comes in a 750ml champagne style bottle, signed by gonzo artist Ralph Steadman. Steadman stepped up to the plate to sign 1500 labels to help the brewery raise money for the Gonzo Memorial Fund. "We've raised $5,000 already through sales of the four-packs but we hope to triple that donation with the sale of the collectors release," said brewery spokesperson Steve Charalambous (aka Stray Dog). The gonzo fund has been set up initially to raise funds for a permanent memorial to Hunter so future generations can ponder the life of one of the worlds great mavericks.

The 1500 bottles have been hand numbered and go on sale from the brewery Friday, June 24 at noon for $95. Each beer has been packaged in a whiskey-style container, inside of which you will find a certificate of authenticity featuring Ralph Steadman's smoking cowboy image of Hunter and quite possibly - THE Golden Ticket! Flying Dog is giving away two invitations to Hunter's private, farewell memorial on Saturday, August 20 in Woody Creek, Colorado. The winner and a friend will be transported up to Woody Creek in Flying Dog 1 to pay their respects to Hunter and witness his final departure from the business end of a cannon. The Willie Wonka style Golden Ticket theme is no accident either: Willie Wonka himself aka Johnny Depp is expected to be one of the attendees at the memorial along with Jack Nicholson and the rest of Hunter's inner circle.

Gonzo Imperial Porter is as challenging as the man it represents and at 9.5% ABV it'll bite back if you don't show it the proper respect. The brewmasters' at Flying Dog have taken their time over this one, for fear of evoking Hunter's wrath. The result is a very well balanced beer with deep smokey flavors.
